Liberated Matter entered the East Village music scene by creating the Cross-Pollination concert series in May 2004. At the outset the series aimed to strengthen the local music community and create a bond between musicians based on their love of music, their craft and their dreams. This goal has continues to thrive to this day.
The set-up of the Cross-Pollination event is as follows: Two of the best singer-songwriters in NYC each play a 40 minute solo set. This is followed by a three song collaborative set during which both artists share the stage. We've seen it all, mutual covers, songs written together especially for the occasion, EP's of the event, playing on each others songs, etc. Fans and artists alike have responded with nothing but praise as they marvel at these unique listening experiences in which artists step out of their comfort zone, and into new and exciting territory.
Artists are paired based on their compatibility as well as the diversity between their musical styles. The pairings that sound the strangest on paper often work out to be the most magical. Cross-Pollinating artists also means cross-pollinating audiences. Artists often end up leaving the room with a whole new set of fans, and an audience with new music to be excited about and some new music-lovers as friends.
Cross-Pollination, at Pianos, has been going on for about 148 weeks straight now (June 2007) and there's not sign of slowing down. Our partner ASCAP has enthusiastically been a part of the event and industry insiders have found it to be quite the refreshing batch of talent to check out weekly.
Cross-Pollination has been written up and reviewed often, including BrooklynVegan, CMJ, Gothamist, Stereogum, and many more.
