Is Wes really Dutch?
No, that is a myth. He is from Nebraska.
What is Liberated Matter and when was it founded?
Liberated Matter was started in February 2004 by Wes, fresh
off the boat from the Netherlands, and Jay Goettelmann, fresh off the
boat from Kansas. After meeting at the famed AntiHootNanny open mic
and disagreeing about Wes's identity they decided, within an hour of
meeting, to start an independent music company. Liberated Matter's
first activity was creating Cross-Pollination, now an East Village
staple, with its goal of stimulating the community feel among
musicians by pairing up artists to share a set and a meal. Wes's
background was in the label sphere, and Jay's in booking, and together
they formed a combination of two very different people into one unique duo.
After Cross-Pollination got rolling in NYC, the World Cafe Live in
Philadelphia requested their own version which ran successfully for one year. In addition, LM started promoting nights all over the
EV/LES at all the top venues by putting their favorite artists
together and once more putting community and quality first.
LM stepped into the realm of artist management as a natural
progression of their desire to put the spotlight on their very
favorite artists and started working more closely with female
singer-songwriter JAYMAY. In the year and a half LM worked with JAYMAY she moved from small shows to packed venues, considerable label attention and a strong local following. Late 2005 and after much success LM and JAYMAY decided to part ways. Now Wes concentrates on progressing his own band The
Undisputed Heavyweights and individual members
Casey Shea and
Jeff Jacobson. Jay also has musical projects of his own including
Jay Mankind and blue-grass super group the
Clipper Ships.
LM tries to put several key values at the core of our activities. Love
for great music, honesty, integrity, community, sharing, a relentless
sleeping pattern, and an appreciation for wine.
